Back to school with an African twist.

BIO

Abisola Akanni has always been a practical individual who has been brought up in a traditional household that took pride in what they wore which stirred Abisola’s interest in Fashion and lead her to develop her technical skills in clothing. Inspired by designers Like Ozwald Boateng who displays great use of colour and shows a strong influence of culture, Abisola would describe her work as bold and colourful; when it comes to the use of textiles she is boundless, experimenting with a range of textiles, playing with textures, prints and scale.
The direction of her latest Spring Summer RTW 2018 Menswear collection is ‘Back to School’ focusing on merging Western and African school uniforms.
Africa emulates the western way of dressing to demonstrate a sign of social and economic progression but in turn has lost the cultural background. Furthermore, her focus for this collection and her brand is to celebrate a modern interpretation and combination that still offers desirability for the contemporary fashion consumer.

Her inspiration came from the popular preppy look and the African attire called Agbada, combining these to offer a different, fun and modern look. Aesthetic development was majorly informed by the African Fabrics used. The prints and colours inspired the fabrication ideas, merging prints to create and develop unique motifs that will be exclusive to designs by Abisola Akanni. This graduate collection was selected as one of the best and outstanding collections of Graduate Fashion Week 2017 and was listed as a finalist for the Gold award.
Within her Fashion Design degree she has developed a strong skill and desire for pattern cutting and garment technicality. It is within this field that she wishes to continue to advance.
