I have created a park space on the site of Leicester's old council building which was demolished at the start of New Walk. This park is to be used to hold many of Leicester's cultural festivals in an attempt to bring different communities and cultures together in celebration.
The design of the space centres around attempting to create a tranquil park just off new walk by using techniques and strategies to block the surrounding high impact sound sources. The first way is that the site is lowered 3m into the ground and landscaped surrounding the edges to remove direct line of sight to the noise sources, the second is through the position of the designed building in a place where the volume of noise is greatest and finally through the use of evergreen tree cover surrounding the edges of the site to make a natural barrier to the noise.
The design of the building comes from the sound it blocks, taking the concept of a waveform which was recorded around the site means that the building itself is made from the sound that it is blocking.
I pursued a predominately digital method to designing and displaying this project in an attempt to embody the design in a way that could be displayed to anybody and everybody while still being understandable and also that the design could become more realistic and believable, even to the point of placing you into the design before it is built.
