I had known that I wanted to study Footwear Design at DMU since my GCSE’s and after having completed my A levels, as well as a foundation art degree, I was offered my place at the university. During my studies I have picked up many skills including pattern making, illustration, manufacturing methods, and CAD. I believe I have made the most of my time here and was overjoyed to be selected to take part in a two-week summer school in Italy at Modartech; a recognised School of Excellence. I learnt a lot of my CAD capabilities and refined much of my design process during the course and I now love incorporating and applying those skills to render my designs.

My passion for footwear design has only grown during the course and I am eager to put my knowledge into practice and develop shoes for the commercial market. I have thoroughly enjoyed my degree and the freedom of a self-negotiated brief for our Final Major Project allowed me to return to my favourite source of inspiration; nature.

The sea has always appealed to me and there is something about standing on a beach and listening to the waves crashing in that has an indescribable feeling. Some of my most precious memories have been spent listening to the waves and cherishing every moment of life.

I began by exploring the sea itself, fishing nets, rope and sea shells before moving onto what lies under the surface of the sea, coral in particular. I was instantly drawn to the vibrant colours, linear patterns, and effects created by the life form. This instant inspiration is why I chose coral to be the theme for my final collection.
