I am a fine art photographer with an interest in people and narratives. A lot of my work is biographical. For me, photography is a way for me to give myself and others a voice and show my view of the world. I draw upon my interests, experiences and people's stories to create photographs that inform and evoke curiosity.
'A Matter of Fancy' is a series that focuses on the practice of cosplay. After originating in Japan, it quickly spread across the western world in the mid-2000s, becoming hugely popular in the last decade. As a member of the 'geek culture' it is something that I have actively been involved in and I am surrounded by it often.
I deliberately set about photographing cosplayers in environments where their characters would not normally be associated with or seen in. The photographs capture the humour and fun that cosplay brings, and they recognise that it is a form of expression practiced by people of all varieties.
